Winter Hikes, Traditions & Indulgence

This special winter hike leads from the Turracher Höhe through wintry stone pine forests to Saureggen, a small district in the biosphere reserve community of Reichenau.

Families have lived and worked on the highest farms in Kärnten for generations, shaping the landscape of the region. When it gets quiet again on the farms in winter, the time has come to cultivate and practise old crafts and traditional customs.

The Grabner family of mountain farmers, known as "Hochsinner", introduces visitors to the old custom of “räuchern” (smoking), which is practised here especially in the time before the "Raunächte” (nights between Christmas and 6 January) and during "Maria Lichtmess” (40 days after Christmas).

The farm of the Grabner family is the highest estate in Kärnten that is open all year round.

After enjoying tea or mulled cider and a regional delicacy, you can savour the beauty of the region on the last part of the hike, before taking the Nockmobil (transportation service) back to Turracher Höhe.
